A Lagrangian heuristic algorithm for a real-world train timetabling problem

چکیده
The train timetabling problem (TTP) aims at determining an optimal timetable for a set of trains which does not violate track capacities and satisfies some operational constraints. In this paper, we describe the design of a train timetabling system that takes into account several additional constraints that arise in real-world applications. In particular, we address the following issues: • Manual block signaling for managing a train on a track segment between two consecutive stations. • Station capacities, i.e., maximum number of trains that can be present in a station at the same time. • Prescribed timetable for a subset of the trains, which is imposed when some of the trains are already scheduled on the railway line and additional trains are to be inserted. • Maintenance operations that keep a track segment occupied for a given period. We show how to incorporate these additional constraints into a mathematical model for a basic version of the problem, and into the resulting Lagrangian heuristic. Computational results on real-world instances from Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the Italian railway infrastructure management company, are presented. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A discrete-event optimization framework for mixed-speed train timetabling problem
Railway scheduling is a complex task of rail operators that involves the generation of a conflict-free train timetable. This paper presents a discrete-event simulation-based optimization approach for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize total weighted unplanned stop time in a hybrid single and double track railway networks. The designed simulation model is used as a platform for ge...
متن کاملTrain Timetabling on double track and multiple station capacity railway with
Train scheduling is one of the significant issues in the railway industry in recent years since it has an important role in efficacy of railway infrastructure. In this paper, the timetabling problem of a multiple tracked railway network is discussed. More specifically, a general model is presented here in which a set of operational and safety requirements is considered. The model handles the tr...
متن کاملApproaches to a real-world train timetabling problem in a railway node
We consider the Train Timetabling Problem (TTP) in a railway node (i.e. a set of stations in an urban area interconnected by tracks), which calls for determining the best schedule for a given set of trains during a given time horizon, while satisfying several track operational constraints. In particular, we consider the context of a highly congested railway node in which different Train Operato...
متن کاملA Lagrangian Heuristic for Robustness, with an Application to Train Timetabling
Finding robust yet efficient solutions to optimization problems is a major practical issue that received large attention in recent years. Starting with stochastic programming, many of the approaches to robustness lead to a significant change in the problem formulation with respect to the non-robust (nominal) case. Besides requiring a much larger computational effort, this often results into maj...
متن کاملA Fast and Efficient Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search Heuristic for the Passenger Train Timetabling Problem with Dynamic Demand
The railway planning process is a complex activity which is usually decomposed into a succession of stages, traditionally network design, line design, timetabling, rolling stock, and personnel planning. In this paper, we study the design and optimization of train timetables adapted to a dynamic demand environment. The objective is to minimize passenger waiting times at the stations. We first de...
